Fighting the Power Shift - Arsene’s Last Struggle?

By Ulysse Pasquier, writing from Montreal

Football clubs do enjoy their deadline drama it seems. These last couple of days have been so hectic it has become difficult to keep track of my Twitter feed every single deal, and the transfer window is not even closed yet! We can expect more signings in the next 24 hours that could shape the rest of the season, notably in the Premier League with much of the attention focused on Arsenal. The Gunners have been incredibly busy since their humiliating defeat at Old Trafford, getting their hands on Park Chu Young from Monaco while waiting for Andre Dos Santos and Per Mertesacker to follow the South Korean to North London. Arsene Wenger has had a very worrying start of the season, to say the least, and Arsenal’s top four spot is already severely threatened, only three match-days into the new campaign. After such disappointing results, there has been increased speculation as to who Arsene Wenger will choose to add to the squad this summer and it seems Gunners fans can finally hope for some big cash to be spent. Unlike other Big Four (+Manchester City) teams, we have not had that luxury and the names that have been thrown out in the press this past week can make us dream. It looks like Bordeaux striker, Marouane Chamakh, is already set to join Arsenal on a free transfer as his contract is coming to an end and I believe he will provide the offensive cover the Gunners have been lacking this season.

Although it would be incredible to sign players in the likes of Mario Balotelli, Yohann Gourcuff, or Edin Dzeko, we have to remember which manager we are dealing with. I still think I can pick out a few players that should not be too expensive.

Arsenal’s problem this season was not scoring goals but rather defending them and as William Gallas is considering a move, Wenger will need to add some quality at the back. Here are some suggestions:
